Democratic Women of New Mexico
The Democratic Women of New Mexico organization was formed in 1977 to give women a stronger voice in the Democrat Party of New
Mexico. The State organization became an affiliate of the National Federation of Democratic Women in 1977.The following is a brief
timeline of that affiliation history.
New Mexico NFDW affiliation
NFDW started in 1972 and the first Convention was in Tennessee
in 1973. An early Western Region Director remembers going from AZ to NM to talk with NM Federation women who were not totally convinced about
joining NFDW. The first name I found in NFDW records was 1977 and I include all listings for New Mexico in lists that I have.

1988 Clara Jones, President, Secretary of State
Presidential candidates Michael Dukakis and Jesse Jackson
spoke to delegates in Albuquerque, NM, at Convention
1990-91 New Mexico didn’t answer a survey sent to state
Federations.
1993 Marie Sedillo registered for the Convention in Austin,
Texas, where Clara
Padilla Jones Andrews was elected 5th Vice
President of NFDW. Clara was now living in Oregon.
