The Democratic Women of New Mexico organization was formed in 1977 to give women a stronger voice in the Democrat Party of New Mexico.  The State organization became an affiliate of the National Federation of Democratic Women in 1977.The following is a brief timeline of that affiliation history.

 

 

 

 

 

New Mexico NFDW affiliation

 

NFDW started in 1972 and the first Convention was in Tennessee in 1973. An early Western Region Director remembers going from AZ to NM to talk with NM Federation women who were not totally convinced about joining NFDW. The first name I found in NFDW records was 1977 and I include all listings for New Mexico in lists that I have.

 

1977-78 Ruby Brown (Mrs. Sam), President, Box 188, Jal, NM 88252

 

1979, Ana Marie Trujello, 400 No. East, Loving, NM 88260 – served on NFDW Resolutions Committee

 

1982, Ina Wilcher listed as ‘former president’, but doesn’t say when

 

1984, Maggie Wetzel, NM President and Regional Director for SW Region of NFDW

 

1985, Marjorie Baker, President, 123 Utah Dr., Portales, NM;

 

Carol Anaya, VP; Carol Robertson Lopez, Recording Sec., Linda C.deBaca, Treasurer; Judy Stubbs (?) Corresponding Secretary; Luanne Kozlowski, Pres, San Juan County Demo Women

 

May 1985 - Issued invitation to NFDW to come to New Mexico for Convention in 1988

 

1988 Clara Jones, President, Secretary of State

Presidential candidates Michael Dukakis and Jesse Jackson spoke to delegates in Albuquerque, NM, at Convention

 

1990-91 New Mexico didn’t answer a survey sent to state Federations.

 

1993 Marie Sedillo registered for the Convention in Austin, Texas, where Clara

Padilla Jones Andrews was elected 5th Vice President of NFDW. Clara was now living in Oregon.

1994 Linda Olmstead, President, 228 Maxine, NE, Albuquerque, NM 78123

2000  - No one listed from New Mexico

 

2002 Rose Scott, 513 E. Seco St., Hobbs, NM 88240

 

2005-07 Mary Herrera, President, 1410 LaMora Lane, SW, Albuquerque, NM

 

2007-  Kathy Duffy, President, 6364 Isleta, SW, Albuquerque, NM
